How to Humanely Deter Strays
Like all animals, feral cats tend to make their home close to where they can find shelter and food, which is often in close proximity to humans. For those who would prefer not to have cats hanging out in and around their yards, these products will help you divert outdoor cats from your property in a humane way. Coupled with Trap-Neuter-Return and ongoing care, they can help you coexist with your neighborhood cats.
To keep cats off of yards, porches, or vehicles, there are a variety of aromatic sprays and powders available. Repellents such as Shake-Away® Domestic Cat Repellent, I Must Garden Dog and Cat Repellent, Liquid Fence® Dog & Cat Repellent, and others are available online or at pet supply stores. Apply these products around the edges of the yard, the tops of fences, and on any favorite digging areas or plants.
For a chemical free method, try an ultrasonic animal repellent such as Cat Stop™, or a motion- activated water sprinkler, such as the ScareCrow™ . Both are available online through Contech. When cats come within range, the automatic deterrent emits a sudden burst of ultrasonic sound or water, startling the cats and teaching them to stay away.
